Our country has a history of taking land from native populations. In 1491, Native people controlled all the 2.4 billion acres that would become the United States. Now they control about 56 million acres, or roughly 2 percent. Poverty, poor health issues and other problems in native communities can be traced to colonization. Returning land to native populations is one way to right these wrongs. Native populations deserve to rule their lands and govern themselves. They should be able to care for and live with the Earth and its resources the way they want. This means being able to hunt for food, have community gardens, access clean water, and build homes or schools on their land.
