The federal government considers rent unaffordable if it costs more than 30% of a household's income. Housing costs have risen more quickly than wages. As a result, more than 23 million people in 10.7 million low-income households pay more than half of their income for rent. Most of these people don't receive housing assistance from the government due to lack of funding. This sometimes means that people can't pay for necessities like food or medicine. Funding for federal rental subsidies could be expanded to decrease the number of people who pay more than 30% of their income on rent.
